What biofilm means for your water system
Biofilm is a layer of microorganisms and the substances they produce. It adheres to damp internal surfaces, such as tank walls and the inside of pipes. Areas above the water level also remain damp after water is drawn off, providing a surface for microorganisms.
When the tank is next filled, parts of this layer can detach, allowing microorganisms to enter the fresh water. That is why treatment needs to cover more than just the visible water in the tank.
Considering the entire water supply path
Water enters the tank through the filler inlet and travels through pipes, pumps and other components to the kitchen, bathroom and shower. These components also have internal surfaces that come into contact with water. They need to be included in the treatment alongside the tank.
Run the water treated with membraclean through the pipework and outlets you want to treat. This allows the active substance to reach the internal surfaces along the flow path and include them in the breakdown of biofilm.
Why water can become contaminated again
Microorganisms can enter the system with new water, through filling equipment and connections, and during use. Remaining deposits and areas with little water flow can also become sources of renewed contamination.
Treatment at the start of the season and ongoing water hygiene therefore serve different purposes. membraclean combines the treatment of existing contamination with the regular disinfection and preservation of newly added drinking water.
Treat first, then maintain water hygiene
After a long period without use, or before the season begins, the priority is to clean and restore the fresh water system. Regular treatment then accompanies subsequent tank refills.
