When choosing a disinfectant, the germs it covers matter. Our activity table shows the spectrum of membraclean and other disinfectant substances. You can see the differences between the pathogen groups shown and relate them to your application.
What spectrum of activity means
The spectrum of activity describes the groups of microorganisms against which an active substance is effective. These include bacteria, fungi, spores and viruses. A broad spectrum is particularly helpful when several pathogen groups are relevant to an application.
The table compares these groups side by side. Colours show whether activity within each group is full, limited, insufficient or absent.
The pathogen groups in the table
Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria differ in their cell wall structure. Mycobacteria form another group of bacteria with a particularly resistant cell envelope. Bacterial spores are resistant dormant forms.
For fungi, the table distinguishes between yeasts and moulds. Viruses are classified as enveloped or non-enveloped. These distinctions help you understand the coverage of a disinfectant substance.
Understanding the colour coding
Full activity indicates comprehensive effectiveness within the group shown in the overview. Limited activity means that only some of the pathogens are covered. Insufficient activity indicates significant gaps in effectiveness. No activity means that no relevant effectiveness is assigned to this group.
The spectrum of activity of membraclean
membraclean acts against the bacteria, mycobacteria, spores, fungi, and enveloped and non-enveloped viruses shown in our table. Its active substance is active chlorine released from hypochlorous acid. It forms the basis of our product ranges for drinking water treatment, surface disinfection and cold fogging.
The overview makes comparison easier. You can see the pathogen groups and choose the appropriate application within our range.
Why active substances differ
Disinfectant substances attack microorganisms in different ways. Alcohols, for example, act against many bacteria and enveloped viruses but are not reliably effective against bacterial spores. In the overview, silver shows gaps in effectiveness against several pathogen groups.
The other active substance groups shown also differ in their spectrum. The comparison illustrates these differences without requiring you to know every technical term.
From the table to your application
For water, tanks and pipework, choose the product range intended for that purpose. Surface disinfectant is available for surfaces that can be treated with moisture. Use membraclean AIR for cold fogging and odour removal.
The table compares groups of active substances. The specific dose, contact time and procedure are provided with each product and in our instructions for use.
